Right now, our summer robotics sessions are in full swing, and the excitement in the room is impossible to miss. Every child comes in with their own idea of what makes robotics fun, and we love hearing what lights them up the most. We asked a few of our students what they are most looking forward to learning, and their answers say a lot about why we do what we do.

What Our Students Are Excited About

Tim is most excited about coding. Coding teaches children to break a problem down into small, logical steps, and to work out what needs to happen and in what order for something to work. It is a skill that rewards patience and precision, and it also builds resilience, because getting the result you want usually means testing an idea, spotting what went wrong and adjusting it until it works.

Coding for kids

Charlie is most excited about coding drones. This takes the fundamentals of coding and applies them to something physical, a set of instructions that has to guide a real object through real space. It introduces children to ideas around movement, direction and timing, and shows them how code can control something well beyond a keyboard or a screen.

The third student we spoke to is most excited about 3D printing. Three dimensional printing takes an idea from a screen and turns it into something you can hold, introducing children to design, measurement and spatial thinking. They learn that an idea has to be planned out carefully before it can become a real object, and that small adjustments to a design can make a big difference to how it turns out.

Three very different interests, coding, coding drones and 3D printing, but they all point to the same thing. Robotics gives children a way to turn curiosity into creation. It is not about memorising facts or sitting through a lecture, it is about building, testing, getting things wrong, trying again and eventually seeing an idea become something real.

Plenty More to Discover

Coding and drones and 3D printing are only part of the picture, though. Across our robotics sessions, children also learn to build and programme their own robots from the ground up, work with circuits to understand how electronics actually function, take on engineering challenges that sharpen their problem solving skills, and explore virtual reality to see how immersive technology is designed and applied. Each activity brings its own set of skills, but together they give children a broad, well rounded introduction to technology and how it is made.

That is what we want every child to experience, whichever part of robotics catches their imagination first. Some will fall in love with the logic of coding, others will be drawn to the thrill of flight, and others still will find their spark in design and engineering. What matters is that they are given the space to explore, make mistakes and discover what excites them.
