Last week, the kids at Funsize Heroes built their very own robots from scratch. This week, it was time to find out if those robots actually worked — and the results were even more exciting than expected.

From Builders to Testers

Building a robot is one thing. Seeing how it moves, reacts, and performs in real-world challenges is a whole different experience — and exactly the kind of hands-on learning that makes Funsize Heroes different from a typical after-school activity.

This week, our young engineers put their creations to the test through:

  • Robot races, to see whose build could move fastest (and stay in one piece)
  • Hands-on challenges, testing how well each robot could respond to different tasks
  • Friendly competitions, where teamwork mattered just as much as engineering

Why Testing Matters as Much as Building

It’s tempting to think the fun part is building the robot and the testing is just a formality. In reality, testing is where the real learning happens. When a robot doesn’t move the way a child expects, they’re forced to ask why — and that question is the beginning of engineering thinking.

Through this week’s races and challenges, the children got a first taste of:

  • Trial and error as a normal, productive part of building something
  • Cause and effect — understanding how a small change in their build changes how the robot behaves
  • Working together to troubleshoot and improve their robots under a bit of friendly pressure

What’s Next: Bringing Code Into the Mix

Next week, the robots get a brain. The children will start coding their robots, working through fun, hands-on challenges designed to build:

  • Logical thinking — breaking a problem into steps a robot can actually follow
  • Problem-solving — figuring out why something isn’t working and how to fix it
  • Creativity — using code to make their robot do things they design themselves

It’s the natural next step after their first two sessions of building and testing: now the kids get to program the machines they made with their own hands.
