It Started Like Any Other Call

A while back, I received a call from someone claiming to be from Revolut.

From the start, the caller was directive — telling me what to do, walking me through steps as if it was all perfectly normal. They said my account needed to be updated and that I had to verify my Maltese ID to activate it. Then they asked me to take out my card.

As soon as I did not play along, the patience ran out fast. The tone got sharper, more impatient, more aggressive.

It was designed to feel official. It was designed to feel urgent. And if I had not known what to look for, it could have gone very differently.

For the past three years, teaching children and schools how to stay safe online has been a big part of what we do at Nobel Courses. And this call was a reminder of exactly why that work matters.

Here is exactly what gave it away.

The 3 Signs That Told Me It Was a Scam

1. They Asked for My Card Details

After the Maltese ID request, they asked whether I had my Visa or Mastercard with me. A real bank should not need you to provide your full card details over the phone, especially on an unannounced call.

No legitimate financial service will call you out of nowhere and ask you to produce your card. If your account genuinely needs verification, you will always be directed to do it through the official app or website.

If a caller asks for your card details, the call is over. Hang up.

2. They Pretended to Already Know My Card

When I said I had a Mastercard, they responded with: “Can you verify your Mastercard number starting with 5.”

That sounds like proof they have access to your account. It is not. Every Mastercard in the world starts with a 5 — just as every Visa starts with a 4. It has nothing to do with you specifically. It is a scripted line designed to make you feel like they already know your details, lowering your guard right before they ask for the information they actually want.

Once you know this, it is impossible to fall for.

3. They Threatened to Close My Account

When they sensed hesitation, the tone shifted immediately. They told me the call was being recorded with the Cyber Crime Unit and that if I did not comply, Revolut would file a complaint against me.

That manufactured threat is the final piece of the tactic — make you panic, stop you from thinking clearly, and get you to act before your instincts kick in. A real bank will never threaten you for not handing over personal details on an unannounced call. A real institution will encourage you to hang up and call back on the official number.

If anything, the threat itself is the clearest sign of all.

This Can Happen to Anyone

Scam calls like this do not target a specific age group or type of person. The mechanics are always the same — establish authority, build false trust, then apply pressure before you have time to think.

Knowing what that looks and sounds like is genuinely useful. The Visa and Mastercard trick alone is something most people have never heard of, yet it is one of the most commonly used lines in financial scams. The moment you know it, it stops working on you.

How We Help Schools Talk to Children About This

Over the past three years, Nobel Courses has visited over 60 schools across Malta, bringing free online safety sessions directly into the classroom. Our work has been endorsed by MDIA and DDLTS.

Our sessions are designed for primary school students and cover the kinds of threats they actually encounter — scams, phishing attempts, unsafe contacts in video games, and how to respond when something online does not feel right.

The sessions are offered completely free of charge to schools across Malta. If you would like to bring one to your school, we would be glad to help.
